Umrah with family: children and older relatives

Practical ways to plan an Umrah with children, parents or grandparents, from choosing the length to staying together in the crowds.

Many families make Umrah together: parents with young children, adults bringing their own parents, sometimes three generations on one journey. Travelling as a family changes the pace of the trip and a few practical choices. This article covers the ones most families ask about.

Choose a length that leaves time to rest

The rites of Umrah take a few hours, but the days around them are tiring, especially for children and older relatives. A longer package gives you rest days without missing prayers in the mosques. Tuyba's 2027 packages run for 7, 9, 12, 15 or 21 nights. If you are unsure, a specialist can talk through the options with you.

The order of the cities matters too. A Madinah-first package starts somewhere calmer and lets everyone adjust to the time difference before Umrah. A Makkah-first package means performing Umrah soon after a long flight, which can be hard for small children and older travellers.

Children

Children can perform Umrah, and many families bring them. How the rites apply to children, and who makes the intention for a very young child, are questions to ask a qualified scholar before you travel.

  • Dress children in clothes that are easy to recognise in a crowd.
  • Give each child a wristband or card with your name, phone number and hotel.
  • Agree on a meeting point. The gates of Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet's Mosque are numbered, so a gate number is easy to remember.
  • Plan tawaf and sa'i for times when your children are rested, not when they are tired or hungry.

Older relatives

  • Talk to their doctor before the trip, especially about walking, heat and medicines.
  • Wheelchairs can be used in both mosques, and there are dedicated routes for them. Check the current arrangements when you arrive.
  • Plan breaks. A rest in the hotel between prayers is often better than staying in the mosque all day.
  • Keep water, medicines and a small snack with you.

Hotels and rooms

The distance between your hotel and the mosque makes a big difference when you are walking with children or older relatives. Each Tuyba package shows its hotel standard, including the distance to the Haram or the Prophet's Mosque. When you request a quote, tell your specialist how many adults, children and infants are travelling, and mention anyone who needs extra help.

Staying together in the crowds

The crowds are largest at the five daily prayers and on Fridays. Many families find it easier to perform tawaf at quieter times outside the prayers. If you get separated, go to your agreed gate and wait. Make sure every adult has a charged phone and the numbers of everyone else in the group.

Make space for everyone's worship

It is easy for one or two adults to spend the whole trip looking after others. Take turns, so that every adult has time for their own prayers and reflection in both holy cities.
